How to read the stars
The overall rating blends health inspections, staffing and quality measures. A home can be 5 stars overall and weaker in one area, so open each facility's page and look at the three pieces. Then visit in person, at different times of day, and ask about staffing.
Two other places to turn
The New Jersey Long-Term Care Ombudsman investigates complaints and shares residents' rights information (1-877-582-6995). It also supports I Choose Home NJ, which can help eligible people who have been in a nursing home 60 days or more return home with in-home services.
Moving Mom in. What about the house?
If Medicaid may be part of the plan, know this before anyone touches the deed. New Jersey reviews five years of transfers, and giving a house to a child or selling it for less than it's worth can trigger a penalty. See the state's MLTSS application guidance. Talk to an elder law attorney first.
When the family is ready, we can tell you what the house is worth and lay out the options: sell, rent or keep. No pressure and no timeline but yours.
